Creating a Silica Dust Exposure Control Plan

Silica dust poses health and safety and compliance challenges in many work environments. Controlling the extremely fine dust is a complex task requiring both proper engineering controls and effective housekeeping practices. Tennant tools and technologies can play an important role in helping you manage the silica dust challenge, and can support silica exposure control plans that help you create safe, healthy, productive work environments.

  • Respirable Silica Dust is created by cutting, sawing, grinding, drilling and crushing silica producing materials. It is mainly found in brick work, sand, and manufacturing concrete industries1.
  • Respirable crystalline silica dust is at least 100 times smaller than sand2.
  • In 2011, about 587,000 Australian were exposed to silica dust while working. It is estimated that 5,728 of these workers will develop lung cancer over the course of their life3.
