Water Saving Tips for Businesses

Taking on water savings can be a big project, but there are many small changes that can be made that add up to make a big difference, such as:

  • Reducing water losses by fixing leaks (a leaking toilet with a flow of .5 gallons per minute will waste 21,000 gallons of water per month, costing you $2,100 per year)
  • Replacing water fixtures for high-efficiency models
  • Educating employees about water efficiency to encourage water-saving behaviors
  • Using water efficient cleaning equipment to clean your facilities
  • Monitoring your landscaping and lawn-care water usage

Once you’ve implemented some of these tactics, you can measure the impact through metering and cost savings to help refine and improve your water saving practices.

Water Management

As costs of water and wastewater services have increased over the past 10 years, businesses have become increasingly aware of their water use and must manage it more efficiently to reduce operating costs. Additionally, as sustainability initiatives become more mainstream, businesses are looking for new ways to conserve water and become leaders in their communities in regard to green initiatives.

In an article from The Guardian, a study indicated that by 2030, global water demand is predicted to increase dramatically to a level 40% above current supply, yet water use has not been high on business agendas until recently.

According to the EPA, by implementing water-efficient best practices, commercial facilities have an opportunity to:

  • Achieve cost savings
  • Increase competitive advantage
  • Reduce risks associated with water scarcity
  • Demonstrate leadership
  • Access opportunities in the green building marketplace
